Had you worked on stop motion films before Coraline?

My previous experience before Coraline was working on live action or live action mixed with CG, Provigil For Sale. what were some of your favorite moments while working with the Coraline crew?

I loved working with the Seam Team/ Rig Removal crew. Everyone was so dedicated to the film. We were a small crew of about 15 people - so we became really close really fast. We had a lot of fun and I think I laughed more then I ever had on a production. We worked hard but we'd also have some fridays that we would screen people's old work from college or previous jobs. Some people brought in stuff from way back in the day and we had a lot of great laughs, Provigil For Sale. We'd also all go to lunch on fridays together, I miss all that and just generally working together. Also, it was great how we got to visit the sets and even had a chance to bring family and friends on a tour of the sets. That was a great privilege.

Henry Selick is one of our favorite directors, did you get a chance to meet him. what was it like to work for him?

Provigil For Sale, I didn't really get to meet him - I think only because I was too shy to ask someone to introduce me, etc... I saw him a lot when I worked in the same studio building - his office was on the same floor as vfx. He is very involved in everything - but he also wanted everyone to have fun regularly and he's really encouraging of people's creativity. Things were really casual and creative even when it got hectic, they had special treat days and BBQs where people would play jump rope and silly things like that. Every friday they'd have beer after 6:00 pm and people would unwind and socialize. There were a couple of times that Neil Gaiman and his family visited the set and he signed books and posters for the crew. I will always remember the Coraline wrap party, He played guitar and sang (along with a band) "It's the End of the World" by REM - and in place of the normal lyrics - they sang everyone's name that worked on the film(first names only), Provigil For Sale. It was pretty cool. I'm excited to work for him again hopefully on the next Laika stop motion production Paranorman.

Any other fun behind the scenes stories you are dying to share with us?

The Coraline production has been really cool with giving us gifts. We got the special mice after the wrap party. Phil Knight, Chairman of Nike, who owns Laika - sent us Coraline: A Visual Companion books in the mail along with a $50 gift card to go see the movie with family. I came in on the last year of a production that was going on for 3+ years so they gave other gifts out early on as well ( like the keys they are selling on ebay). I truly enjoy working as part of a big creative team and process. It's always a blast to meet and work with new artists with such diverse backgrounds in schooling and creatively. It's a difficult field and working 10-12 hour days in a dark room staring at noodlely things on your monitor, can get things go silly and wacky sometimes. People get stir crazy and we usually end up entertaining ourselves with sing-a-longs, nerf gun fights and general tomfoolery. Things can get stressful and tiring at the end of production, you're never home, and generally artists get burned out.

I always find myself thinking: "why do I live like this?"
Then, you have time off, the movie comes out and people tell you how cool the movie is.

That's when you realize you got to be a part of the creative team that made a cool movie - and in some cases a magical piece of art - and it always ends up being worth it.
